How to Choose a Reputable Dog Breeder

As a dog trainer, I often get asked how to choose a reputable dog breeder. This is an important question, as choosing the right breeder can have a big impact on the health and temperament of your dog.

What is a reputable dog breeder?

A reputable dog breeder is someone who is committed to breeding healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They will do their research to select breeding dogs that are free of genetic defects, and they will provide their dogs with the best possible care.

Here are some tips for choosing a reputable dog breeder:

  • Ask for recommendations. Talk to your veterinarian, friends, and family members who have dogs to see if they have any recommendations for breeders.

  • Do your research. Read about the breed you are interested in and learn about the common health problems of the breed. You can also check out online breeder directories, such as the American Kennel Club's Breeder of Merit program, or our partners here.

  • Visit the breeder's facility. Ask the breeder if you can visit their facility and meet the parents of the puppies. This will give you a chance to see how the dogs are being raised and cared for.

  • Ask questions. A reputable breeder will be happy to answer your questions about their breeding practices, health testing, and socialization efforts.

  • Get a written contract. A written contract will protect both you and the breeder. It should include information about the puppy's health, temperament, and warranty.

Red flags to watch out for:

  • Breeders who are not registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) or another reputable registry and raise purebreds. Designer dog breeders will have full health testing such as OFA and other tests for genetic defects, but may not be registered.

  • Breeders who are not willing to answer your questions or who seem evasive.

  • Breeders who sell puppies in pet stores or online without meeting the puppies or their parents.

  • Breeders who offer puppies at a significantly lower price than other breeders.

Choosing a reputable dog breeder is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. By doing your research and asking questions, you can increase your chances of finding a breeder who will provide you with a healthy, well-adjusted puppy.

Here are some additional tips for bringing home a new puppy:

  • Puppy-proof your home. This means removing any potential hazards, such as electrical cords and poisonous plants.

  • Stock up on supplies. This includes food, water bowls, a leash, collar, and crate.

  • Schedule a checkup with your veterinarian. This is a good time to ask about vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and other general health care advice.

  • Be patient and consistent with training. It takes time and patience to train a puppy. Be consistent with your commands and use positive reinforcement techniques. Find a trainer your trust to be a part of your new dogs life forever.

Bringing home a new puppy is a big responsibility, but it is also very rewarding. By choosing a reputable breeder and taking good care of your puppy, you can set your dog up for a long, happy, and healthy life.
